Welcome to the 'International Health Research' webpage.  This section of the NSHRF's website will be dedicated to providing information about international health research-related topics.

The creation of this webpage is in response to requests from attendees of the NSHRF's November 16th workshop, International Health Research in Nova Scotia - Understanding and Seizing the Opportunities.  To view post-event documents from this workshop, click here.

Building a Global Health Research Community in Nova Scotia

This report summarizes the proceedings of the workshop on “Building a Global Health Research Community in Nova Scotia” organized by the International Health Office and Lester Pearson International at Dalhousie University, the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation, and the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research. Specific objectives of the workshop included:

  • To network with our global health research colleagues
  • To discuss current global health research being undertaken by Nova ScotiaResearchers
  • To review the role of the Canadian Coalition of Global Health Research CCGHR
  • To identify opportunities to support the growth of the global health research community in Nova Scotia

    Organizations Involved in Global Health Research

    Dalhousie University International Health Office

    Established in 2001, Dalhousie's International Health Office supports faculty, staff, and students through educational activities and resources targeting global health issues.  The International Health Office is a team of health care professionals, educators and managers who work with a network of people and organizations committed to promoting better and more equitable health worldwide through the production and use of relevant knowledge.  The International Health Office works to develop international partners in order to reduce disparities by building education, research and development capacity.

    The Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research  CCGHR

    The Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research is a not-for-profit organization and members incude global health researchers, people actively engaged in applying research to improve global health, organizations interested in funding health research and members of the general public who share our vision and goals. The Coalition began in 2001 as an informal network and has evolved through generous support from the Canadian International Development Agency, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Health Canada, the International Development Research Centre and other foundations.

    The International Development Research Centre IDRC

    The International Development Research Centre IDRC is a Crown corporation created by the Parliament of Canada in 1970 to help developing countries use science and technology to find practical, long-term solutions to the social, economic, and environmental problems they face.

    International Science and Technology Center

    The International Science and Technology Center ISTC was established by international agreement in November 1992 as a nonproliferation program.

    The ISTC coordinates the efforts of numerous governments, international organizations, and private sector industries, providing weapons scientists from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States new opportunities in international partnership. Through its political, legal, and financial frameworks, the ISTC contributes to Fundamental Research, International Programs and Innovation and Commercialization, by linking the demands of international markets with the exceptional pool of scientific talent available in Russian and CIS institutes.

    Science and Technology Center in Ukraine

    The Science and Technology Center in Ukraine  STCU is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the prevention of the proliferation of expertise related to weapons of mass destruction WMD .

    The STCU vision: for a safer and better world, to assist former WMD experts in the transition to self-supporting, peaceful activities in the international science and business communities...and to do so using the best professional practices.

    Since 1993, private companies and government agencies from the European Union, United States, and Canada have used the STCU to manage over 1,100 R&D projects, worth over 166 million dollars.
