Today the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation (NSHRF) will mark the closing of its 10th anniversary with a reception recognizing those who received awards through 10th anniversary celebrations, those who have supported the organizations for the past decade, and this year’s funded recipients.

Nine high school students across the province were honoured - and surprised - at their graduation ceremonies. They each won a $10,000 scholarship from the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation NSHRF. One scholarship was presented to a student in each of the nine school districts, and a province-wide award of an additional $10,000 was awarded to Kurtis Turnbull, a graduate of Pictou Academy.

This award is being offered as part of the 10th Anniversary celebrations of the Foundation.

To mark its 10th anniversary, the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation NSHRF has established a one-time competition for NSCAD University students. The NSHRF Art Award -designed to develop a fuller understanding of the integration of art and science – will offer $10,000 in prizes: $5000 for first place, $3000 for second place and $2000 for third place.

Dr. Rob Adamson has been awarded the 2009 The Quest, the John Ruedy Award, to develop high frequency diagnostic ultrasound probes that will improve surgeons’ability to see and repair disease and damage in the middle and inner ear.

Tara-Leigh McHugh, is the recipient of the 2008 The Quest, The John Ruedy Award. Tara-Leigh a native of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is a doctoral candidate who has accepted a post doctorate opportunity at Dalhousie University to continue exploring the factors that influence exercise behaviours among patients who have participated in cardiac rehabilitation programs.

The World Health Organization WHO has designated Dalhousie University’s School of Nursing and Faculty of Health Professions as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Workforce Planning and Research. The NSHRF is collaborating with partners Dalhousie University, the Nova Scotia Department of Health, and Health Canada specifically, the Health Human Resources Strategies Division and the Office of Nursing Policy for this initiative.
